Images from Haiti

in Faith

You know how it goes by now – with our 24 hour “news” cycle, a tragedy like the earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti January 12 hits the airwaves with sketchy details at first, then the truth begins to settle in, then the commentary runs ad nauseam.  And through it all, the pictures are shown, the video rolls … devastation packaged for our entertainment observation.

What could redeem this voyeuristic phenomenon is if the images captured our heart enough to cause a life-giving response.

The folks at theworkofthepeople.com have put together a video that helps encourage just that.  I hope you’ll take a minute and watch – but watch with a different mindset – not just seeing to be informed, but seeing to be transformed by one of the most powerful human capacities, empathy.  Empathy for the plight of the nearly 3 million people impacted and the tens of thousands killed.

em·pa·thy  \ˈem-pə-thē\  : noun
: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another …

Empathy can lead to prayer.

Empathy can lead to listening.

Empathy can lead to action, in love.
