A Visual Representation of Civil Religion

Part of me can’t believe this image exists (ht Matt Stone), but part of me knows this is the state of “Christianity” in America — American-ianity.

The peasant carpenter Messiah of the Bible has been co-opted by a middle-class religious mechanism.  The rebel-Jesus has been neutered and propped up as a chaplain/endorser/cheer-leader for a nationalist agenda that is at cross-purposes with the kingdom he came to initiate.

Idolatry-civil religion

Troubling.  Disgusting.  Idolatrous.

One more descriptive word while I’m at it:  convicting.  How have I (re)created Jesus in my own image, transposed him into my agendas, and otherwise stuffed him into my “box” until he’s barely recognizable?

Look at the people in Jesus’ lower left hand. It makes my stomach turn. I have recently been disturbed because the American Christian Church has silenced me. I can not risk speaking out because I will lose a majority of my support. Christianity in the country has become equal to a political party. If I do not belong to that political party- I am not a Christian…therefore would make a rather sorry missionary. Blech. And I probabyl should not even post this (it would help if you would stop writing things that are so pertinent to my present ponderings) Haha.
